In some situations, using the mean is not appropriate. In a set of figures, one figure could be way higher or way lower than the majority of the numbers. Check out these tiger prices:
$7500, $8000, $6900, $17000
In this case, using the mean will probably not be the best solution for figuring out the average because $17000 is much higher than the rest, it is what we call an outlier.
Instead, we can use something called a MEDIAN.
The median is the middle number of the data set. It is exactly like it sounds.
HOW DO I CALCULATE THE MEDIAN?
- Mean - Mean is the average. It's also the meanest because it takes the most math to figure it out.
- Median - The median is the middle. They both have a "d" in them.
